7 Summer Activities for the Whole Family

Many of us anticipate summertime all year long. Make the most of it with your family by trying out some of the ideas below.

Happy Canada Day! Looking for some ideas to get outside today (and the rest of summer)? We’ve compiled a list of our favourite ways to keep you and your family enjoying summer all season long.

Backyard Camping

Going camping to your favourite spots might be a bit more complicated this year. A fun way to still get outside and spend time with the family is to go camping in the backyard. Set up a tent, grab the sleeping bags and flashlights and head outdoors for the night. If you have a fire pit in the backyard, don’t forget the s’mores!

Keep cool with Healthy Summer Treats

In summer it’s great to indulge in those treats we love like ice cream or popsicles, but having a few healthy alternatives on hand is a great way to mix in some fruit as well. Check out these recipes for summer treats that are also good for you:

No pool? No problem.

Have some fun with water in your own backyard! On a hot summer day, nothing feels better than staying cool by playing in water. Set up your own ‘water park’ with sprinklers, buckets, slip n slides and water balloons in the backyard.

Backyard or Park Games

Make playing outside fun with some games and activities. Play these games right in your backyard or if you need a bit more space, head to the park to try out these ideas:

  • Throw around a frisbee or start up an ultimate frisbee game.
  • On an especially windy day, fly a kite!
  • If you are feeling adventurous, create an obstacle course with materials you have around the yard for your kids to complete.
  • Split the family into teams and play capture the flag.

Visit a Drive-in Movie Theater

Tired of staying in and watching movies? Check out this list of drive-in theaters in Saskatchewan to find one near you! If you’re in Saskatoon, Sasktel Centre has turned their parking lot into a drive-in theater. A drive-in theater is a fun way to relax and enjoy a movie, but still enjoy a summer evening outside.

Hiking

Hiking is a great way to get outside and enjoy nature. With tons of hiking trails in Saskatchewan, find one that is the right fit for your family. To keep the hike interesting, create a nature scavenger hunt to complete along the way. Include items such as: specific birds or animals, trees, bugs, flowers or other plants. Customize it to your area and route!

Rainy Day Activities

Although we try to spend as much time as we can outdoors during the summer months, there are times when weather does not permit. For those kids who enjoy arts and crafts, check out this list of fun summer crafts. From wind chimes, DIY fireflies or sun catchers, these crafts will keep your little ones busy for an afternoon.

On the other hand…if you’re not scared to get a little wet, grab the rain boots and rain coats and head out with the family for a rainy day walk. Splash around in the puddles and warm up inside afterwards with some hot chocolate.
